She Rides the Dawn: A Tribute to the Courage of Female Surfers
There’s something magical about watching a surfer take on the waves at dawn. The sky is fiery, the ocean alive, and there she is—board in hand, messy bun tied up, standing tall, ready to face whatever the sea throws at her. That moment of courage, determination, and grace is exactly what inspired my painting She Rides the Dawn, which I’m so excited to share with you.
Not the best pic, but here is me set up at Oceanfest next to the original "She Rides the Dawn." It was a great event, and I hope to do it again in May 2025!
The original piece sold quickly at Oceanfest to my amazing collector who is also a surfer! Captured at sunrise on Topsail Beach, this painting celebrates the fearless women who ride the waves and face the unknown every single day. Living near Surf City, NC, I’ve spent countless days watching surfers glide through the water with an ease that both intimidates and inspires me. Their bravery blows me away, especially the women who take on the waves. They embody a mix of power and grace, constantly pushing themselves and embracing the unpredictable ocean. To be honest, I boogie board and even that causes enough fear in my life! It’s exhilarating but also terrifying, and it reminds me of how much courage it takes to become a true surfer. I would need years of swimming lessons and personal training just to attempt what these women do on the daily. Seriously, every time I see a woman paddle out, I can’t help but be in awe of her strength and resolve.
It’s that blend of strength and serenity that inspired She Rides the Dawn. I wanted to capture not only the beauty of the sunrise but also the courage and fearlessness of women surfers. The sunrise is symbolic of new beginnings, much like each wave they face, and I find myself feeling encouraged and empowered just by watching them. It’s a reminder that we all have fears to face, but facing them head-on is where the magic happens.
For all you women surfers out there, I hope this piece speaks to you as much as your sport speaks to me. There’s something deeply beautiful about watching someone conquer their fears and ride with the rhythm of the ocean, and that’s exactly what I aimed to capture in this painting.
So here’s to the brave women surfers who face the ocean with courage, time and time again. May you always ride the dawn, and may this piece serve as a reminder of the strength that lives within you. 🌊 🫶🏻 Annie
